What is FCTRN?

The Fairfield County Trauma Recovery Network (FCTRN) is a volunteer network dedicated to preventing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder commonly know as PTSD. We have specialized expertise working with First Responders as well as the larger community.

This volunteer organization of EMDR professionals is ready to respond in the case of an emergency situation or disaster in our community.

FCTRN operates locally within the international framework of the umbrella organization EMDR HAP (Humanitarian Assistance Program).

Our Mission:

To develop and maintain a network of licensed clinicians who provide early EMDR interventions as part of the frontline trauma response and recovery when needed.

What is EMDR?

Through EMDR (Eye Movement, Desensitization, and Reprocessing) therapy, clients are able to reprocess traumatic information until it is no longer psychologically disruptive. This eliminates the disturbing symptoms of trauma such as intrusive memories, sleep disturbance and irritability, to name a few.

EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro, PhD in the late 1980’s. It is a cost-effective, non-invasive, evidence-based method of psychotherapy that facilitates adaptive information processing. In other words, EMDR helps you digest the trauma experience so that it no longer negatively impacts your life. It does this with an eight-phase treatment that identifies and addresses experiences that have overwhelmed the brain’s natural resilience or coping capacity and have thereby generated traumatic symptoms and/or harmful coping strategies. EMDR is not traditional talk therapy.

Having Trouble Coping?

After a disaster, survivors, loved ones, or first responders are at risk for distress. It’s important to know when to ask for help.

Signs of stress related to disaster may include:

  • Re-experiencing parts of the event, “flashbacks”
  • Eating or sleeping too much or too little
  • Pulling away from people and things
  • Having low or no energy
  • Feeling numb or like nothing matters
  • Having unexplained aches and pains
  • Feeling helpless or hopeless
  • Smoking, drinking or using drugs more than you should
